Quick Answer – Can Bearded Dragons Eat Celery?
Yes – however it should be added in addition to dark veggies!!
Celery is a light green veggie that contains a high amount of fiber and water, but no real nutritional value. Another food in this category to not allow as a main staple in your beardies diet is iceberg lettuce.
Pro Tip – Because of the nutrient poor density of celery, we highly recommend you dust your food with a calcium supplement! Beardies need a 2:1 ratio of calcium to phosphorus or they might get metabolic bone disease (MBD).
IMPORTANT – Make sure the celery is thoroughly washed and is completely raw. You want to avoid feeding any pesticides or herbicides to your bearded dragon. Also – make sure to cut the celery into pieces small enough for them to eat (think smaller than the width of their head).

Long Answer – Can Bearded Dragons Eat Celery?
Beardies will normally not eat celery if they’re in the wild. Because of the high density of fiber and water it doesn’t give them the energy they need to hunt by itself.
But as a topper to their salad, or just for a little snack to help with hydration, celery is an excellent choice to provide your bearded dragon.
If you’re interested in learning more about how celery is good and bad for your beardie you’ve come to the right place!
Here’s the good news:
Celery is a fantastic starting point for any new bearded dragon owner. As long as you get a raw stalk, wash it out, and cut into tiny pieces.
If your beardie is experiencing trouble with drinking their water you have the perfect way to help with their hydration… Feed them celery!!
Here are the benefits for your beardie eating celery:
1. High Fiber Content
Just like humans your bearded dragon will need fiber content to ensure proper digestive health. Celery is “stalk” full of fiber to help them pass the poo through without risk of impaction. Just make sure the pieces are small enough.
2. High Water Content
Celery is roughly 97% water. This is great if your beardie is not drinking as feeding them celery will help with hydration!
Because of the water content we recommend you only feed celery along with other dark green veggies. That way they get just enough water and don’t get the runs.
Here’s the bad news:
Celery have a couple qualities which make them not the ideal food for everyday use, if you’re feeding them just celery.
1. Very Nutrient Poor
Celery is basically water and fiber. They don’t provide much nutrients, if any actually. Because of this we highly recommend you don’t feed your beardie only celery. You should either as a calcium supplement or mix with other darker green veggies.
The Bottom Line
Feel free to give your favorite lizard friend celery – just pay close attention to the recommendations above.
Like I said, it’s highly recommended you add the calcium supplement (without D3) to your food anyways.
When you’re preparing it, be sure to cut into tiny pieces and add to the salad they’re getting already.
