Can Bearded Dragons Eat Bananas?

Quick Answer – Can Bearded Dragons Eat Bananas?

Yes bearded dragons can eat bananas — but we highly recommend you do NOT feed your beardie bananas.

At best you can feed them banana’s 1 time a month. However, in my experience – and when speaking with other veterinarians – bananas can cause digestion issues and likely get your bearded dragon sick.

Here’s why: bananas are high in phosphorus which can soak the calcium within your bearded dragon. If your favorite lizard has too little calcium it can lead to metabolic bone disease.

Trust me – you want to stay away from any foods or supplements which contain phosphorus.

Long Answer – Can Bearded Dragons Eat Bananas?

So… you’re thinking of feeding your little guy some mashed bananas?

Like I said before – you can definitely feed them bananas if you’re in a pinch and your beardie isn’t eating his veggies.

My personal opinion and recommendation, don’t waste the effort on it. To me – it’s best to not run the risk of giving them bananas when I have apples and strawberries I can use as treats.

You’re not in the wrong at all! Bananas are awesome for potassium and bearded dragons usually think they taste delish.

It’s just they don’t have the right nutritional value to warrant feeding it to them.

Here’s why:

1. High Amounts of Phosphorus

Bearded dragons require a certain ratio of calcium vs phosphorus circulating their system. More specifically, their regulatory system requires at least a 1:1 ratio of calcium to phosphorus in their diet.

If this ratio is left unbalanced for a long period of time you’ll begin to see symptoms of MBD – metabolic bone disease.

MBD is such a pervasive issue for bearded dragons that VetMed recommends owners supplement extra calcium into their diet just to maintain a high ratio of calcium to phosphorus.

Basically… Best to stay away from foods with phosphorus, which includes bananas.

2. High Sugar Content

Fructose isn’t necessarily a bad thing for your beardie, but if it gets too much sugar you will likely need to clean up diarrhea from your tank.

In general you want to stay away from fruits because the high sugar content will cause the runs which means your lizard will feel indigestion, and you’ll be stuck with the mess. Plus, sugar tends to wear your beardies teeth down quickly.

Fruits should really only be used as a way to treat your bearded dragon and stimulate digestion if and when you use them.

Pro Tip: Use fruits as a way to help them eat their veggies by mixing the fruit in with the greens you’re feeding them!
